Now that it’s officially February, I figured that it was appropriate to go ahead and share this recipe. I’ve been so excited to post this one because these Vegan Valentine’s Day Cookies are SO SIMPLE to make and perfect for your special someone (or even ALL for yourself ?). Can’t wait to see you all making these!
I made these cookies a good few weeks ago and have been so excited to share the recipe. It’s based off of my classic Vegan Sugar Cookie recipe and HOLY is it such a phenomenal recipe.
Since there aren’t many Valentine’s Day recipes on my blog, I figured that this was as good a year as any to remedy that situation. So I present to you the most delicious (and surprisingly easy) Valentines Cookies:
I like to make these cookies in a stand mixer but I just find the whole process much easier that way (even if the big ole bowl is a little annoying to clean). However, you can totally make this recipe by hand or using a hand mixer as desired.
To make things a little easier, you can also make the dough ahead of time and let it chill until ready to use. And if you want to make things SUPER easy, you can even roll the dough into a log, chill, and simple cut slices (like slice and bake cookies from the store) and bake. I’ve tried it all and no matter what you, these cookies always turn out DELICIOUS!
The cookies themselves aren’t overly sweet. This is intentional as we’re adding quite a bit of sweetness to the cookies when we frost them. That being said, the cookies are a bit sweet and still totally delicious on their own.
I thought that the red cookies with pink frosting would be perfect for Valentine’s Day HOWEVER, you can certainly leave the food coloring out and make un-colored cookies and/ or frosting. There’s no right or wrong with these cookies and I love them for that :)
Ingredients in these valentines day cookies:
- Flour- I used a plain all-purpose flour but if you’re looking to make these gluten free, I suggest simply using a gluten free 1-1 flour.
- Sugar- plain cane sugar is what I used.
- Plant based milk- I used oat milk but really anything works well here.
- Extracts- vanilla AND almond. If you can help it, do NOT skip the almond extract. It adds such a delightful flavor to these cookies!
- Red food coloring- as desired. You could definitely skip it
- Vegan butter- my all time favorite is Country Crock plant butter but these would work with others as well!
- Cornstarch- this works in place of the eggs to really help the cookies hold together well.
How to make these cookies:
- Combine all of the dry ingredients and
- whisk it all together
- Cream together the butter and sugar before adding the remaining wet ingredients including the food coloring
- Combine the dry and wet ingredients until just combined
- Roll the dough out in between 2 pieces of parchment paper so that it’s about 1/3 of an inch thick
- Cut out desired shapes, chill for 10 minutes and then bake for 10 minutes
As usual, PLEASE let me know if you make these Valentines Day Cookies and how you like them! You can come back here and leave a comment or tag me on instagram (@foodwithfeeling).

Vegan Valentines Day Cookies
Ingredients
For the cookies:
- ½ cup 1 stick vegan butter, room temperature
- ½ cup of sugar
- 3 tablespoons of plant based milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract, optional but highly recommended
- red food coloring as desired. I used about 5 drops but every food coloring is different so do what feels right
- 2 cups all purpose flour, + more for rolling out.
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
For the cookies frosting:
- 3 tablespoons of vegan butter, softened
- 2 cups of powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons of plant-milk
- ¼ teaspoon of vanilla
- ¼ teaspoon of almond extract
- food coloring as desired, I used about 2 crops of red to get a pale pink frosting
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line a large baking tray with parchment paper.
- Mix the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl and set aside.
- Beat the softened vegan butter and sugar together in a stand mixer or using an electric handheld mixer for 2 minutes or until it comes together. Scrape the sides of the bowl and beat again for another minute, until light and fluffy. Add in the almond milk, extracts, and food coloring and mix until combined.
- Slowly combine the dry with the wet and beat until a dough has formed – about 2-3 minutes of mixing. Do not over mix – once the dough comes together, it’s ready.
- Move the dough to a floured surface (or place it in between 2 pieces of parchment paper for easy rolling). Roll the dough out to 1/3 inch in thickness. Use a heart cookie cutter to cut out your cookies and carefully transfer them to a parchment lined cookie sheet, 1 inch between each cookie. Continue to re-roll the dough and cut out cookies until you have used all the dough.
- Place the tray in the fridge for 10 minutes. DO NOT skip this step as it's crucial for the cookies to nicely maintain their shape. Bake straight from the fridge for 10-12 minutes, until slightly golden around the edges. Remove and allow to cool.
- Make the frosting by combining the butter and half of the powdered sugar in a stand mixer (or using a hand mixer) until just combined. Add the remaining powdered sugar as well as the milk, vanilla, almond extract, and food coloring. Continue to whisk until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Frost the cookies or pipe the frosting on in your desired design. ENJOY!
So cute!! They held together quite well and turned out like really cute little sugar cookies. The frosting amount was also about double what I needed.
Made these delightful cookies to celebrate heart day with my spouse :D I loved them and just as the recipe says, they are very easy and very fun to make. I needed to add 8 drops of my red food coloring to get the color I wanted but other than that, these turned out so cute and delicious! I also did a little chocolate frosting number to top them off. I love that they are not overly sweet!
