I LOVE a good Mojito Cocktail and while I’m a huge fan of the classic recipe, I always love a fun twist as well. This Blood Orange Mojito is simple to make and such a great way to enjoy blood orange season!

It’s been FAR TOO LONG since I posted a new cocktail recipe and you’re going to love this one!

Mojitos are EASILY one of my favorite cocktails to make at home and while I usually enjoy them during the summer when I have fresh mint growing in my garden, I couldn’t help this blood orange flavored mojito while it’s still citrus season.

What you’ll need:

  1. Blood Orange Simple Syrup– the simple syrup recipe is down below and consists of water, sugar, mint, and blood orange juice. If you’re looking to make the syrup with something other than cane sugar, I have a whole post about making simple syrup using maple syrup, honey, coconut sugar and more!
  2. White Rum– mojitos are traditionally made with white rum.
  3. Lime juice– another traditional ingredient in a mojito, lime juice adds a delicious freshness to this cocktail!
  4. Blood orange juice– If you can’t find these or it’s no longer blood orange season, you can easily swap this for a different citrus juice such as grapefruit or orange juice.
  5. Mint
  6. Club soda– love a mojito with club soda but you can also swap this for sparkling water or even ginger beer!

Making this cocktail is as simple as muddling together the mint, rum, lime and blood orange juice for about a minute. This helps release all of the flavor from the mint!

Next simple add in the simple syrup and some ice and shake until the cocktail is combined and nicely chilled.

Strain into a tall glass filled with ice and then top with club soda! So simple but SO so delicious!

Ingredients 

  • For the Simple Syrup
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves
  • ½ blood orange, juiced
  • For Blood Orange Mojito
  • 1 ounce white rum
  • 1 lime, juiced (about ¾ ounce)
  • 1 blood orange, juiced (about 1 1/2 ounces)
  • ½ ounce simple syrup, or to taste
  • 4-5 mint leaves
  • Club soda or seltzer water

Instructions 

  • For the Simple Syrup
  • In a small saucepan set over medium-high heat, combine the water, granulated sugar, mint leaves, and blood orange juice. Bring to a boil and cook until the sugar has dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat. Cover and allow the syrup to steep for 30 minutes. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove the mint leaves and orange pulp. 
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. 
  • For Blood Orange Mojito
  • Mix the rum, lime juice, blood orange juice, simple syrup, and mint in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for about 30 seconds so that the drink is thoroughly mixed and nicely chilled.
  • Strain into a highball glass filled with ice and top with club soda. Garnish with mint leaves and a slice of blood orange. ENJOY!

Notes

To make a virgin mojito, leave out the rum. 
I recommend using freshly squeezed juice. It really makes a difference. 
Nutritional info is for 1 cocktail containing .5 ounces of the simple syrup.
